Ann Rozhon

When working either directly from the model or from drawings, I’m passionate about the application of energy into and onto the clay, followed by a period of tightening up of form and purpose, when I decide where I want to go with the work. Generally, I like to give the figures and other elements the feeling of a narrative, without being too specific. For the portraits, whether commissioned or on my own, I like the sitter's personality to be revealed in a subtle upturned smile or a sidelong gaze. I enjoy working with people in person, but I can also work from photographs.

So many subjects to paint! Excitement is everywhere-a stream in the woods, grasses next to a marsh, buildings in cities and seaside villages. All experienced as a plein air meditation. A beautiful way to spend time outdoors. When I’m painting, I feel totally free…away from any constraints.

Experience & Employment

I have worked as an exhibit designer at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, also in architectural façade restoration, and for the last 45 years as the monitor for a variety of of drawing and sculpture classes. I currently teach painting workshops on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

I have been hired for both sculpture and painting commissions, most recently creating the annual M.V.P. trophy for the Ohio State football program.

Since 1984 I’ve been working as a full-time visual artist, currently maintaining a studio in Pawtucket, R.I., as well as a studio-gallery attached to my home in North Scituate.
