I’ve been studying different types of spatial arrangement, at times breaking with linear based Renaissance perspective. I use unique juxtapositions of scale, and draw from diverse inspirational sources for subject matter. History, memory and a relationship to nature play a big role in my imaginary narratives.
2022
The new pieces represent a continuation of the sculptural direction I’ve been pursuing since becoming a full-time professional artist in 1985. This newest work employs a lower relief modality which allows for further exploration of the tension created between the paint or encaustic and the three-dimensional surface. The rough outer edges contribute to the sensation of memory salvaged and give them a desired theatricality.
My process for creating the work is: #1 model in clay… #2 rubber mold… #3 cast in plaster, wood, and acid-free paper… #4 paint in encaustic wax and/or oil paint. The black panels which attach to the back of the sculpture are then placed into a black floating frame. The frame becomes a significant part of the work.
